Think Outside The Box Through Customization

Packaging of the Week

This box for Samuel and Sons was custom-made both with size and shape in mind. It is covered in custom embossed paper, giving it a luxurious look and feel. The simple typographic logo and the neutral grey add sophistication to the design, while the rectangular shape makes it unique. The elegant packaging is used to showcase Samuel and Sons’ samples and reflects the quality of the upscale home decor company’s merchandise.

There are many ways to customize a box. The easiest way to make your packaging your own is by choosing a specific size, shape, material or color for it. These factors represent your brand and sends the message of what type of product you have. Depending on your needs, there are many types of boxes you can use, such as: mailers, apparel, web, corrugated, jewelry, and gift card holders.

Think outside the box when you’re customizing your packaging; you can embellish it in numerous ways. A box does not have to be square; you can make it rectangular, triangular, cylindrical, hexagonal, or any other shape you like! You can also add some special touches, including, but not limited to: embossing, hot stamping, spot uv, screen printing, custom padding, custom inserts, flocking, and custom ribbon accents.

When making custom retail packaging, think of the message you want to convey with your brand, and don’t be afraid to try something different!

When considering a packaging box purchase, the first question is, what type of box do you need?

Nested boxes: Usually sturdy, set-up boxes, sized to stack inside of each other. Nested boxes are often situated in threes to optimize storage and freight costs.

Jewelry boxes: Small boxes for jewelry pieces, often kept for storage and for sentimental reasons. They come in hard set up or hinged styles. Many jewelry boxes are either cotton filled or feature custom inserts.

Simplex boxes: These boxes fold flat for economical storage and shipping.  When assembled, they look like more expensive hard set up boxes.  They commonly have shallow lids.  This style is favored in the apparel industry.

Pop-up boxes: Easy to assemble and pack flat, pop-up boxes are sturdy and economical. They can be either one- or two-piece constructions with interchangeable tops and bottoms.

Set-up boxes: Already created with rigid sides, set-up boxes are perfect for small gifts and secure shipping.

Stationary boxes: This style typically has a hard set up base with a clear corner locking acetate top.

Gift card boxes: Small, slim boxes hold gift cards, increasing the perceived value.

Size, paper choice and customization are easily applied to each of these basic box style choices. The customization choices are endless. Dyed, eco-friendly or custom paper can be added to each box choice.   Almost any size—big or small—is possible. Your logo can be hot stamped, embossed or printed on the packaging box for additional branding. Even ribbon can be custom printed to accent your box.
